Tanzenden Sterne: Andromeda by ono-mono Tanzenden Sterne: Andromeda by ono-mono
A piece for a constellation-themed book to be released at a later date. Will post more information as it becomes available.

Most portrayals of Andromeda in classical art have her struggling against her chains, fearful of the sea monster Cetus and desperately awaiting the arrival of the Hero, Perseus. But to me, Andromeda was a willing sacrifice, a hero in her own right. What interested me was Andromeda's relationship with Cetus and what Cetus represented in the myth besides a mindless devourer of women. Upon discovering Cetus' other name, The Whale, it hit me that perhaps Cetus could represent the unknown-- the denizens of the deep, the realm beyond human convention. Thus, I chained Andromeda with the expectations of a maiden, with veils and hair and crowned her with a spiral galaxy and let Cetus be The Whale, the promise of an escape if they can break free from the narrow confines of the Hero's myth.

What a wonderful interpretation! I'll need to reread the myth with this in mind.

This picture is lovely. The story that goes with it, and your re-imagining of the myth, however, is even lovier. Beautifully done.

This piece takes my breath away.. The composition and your use of light versus darkness is brilliant!
I was also really fascinated to read about your very different interpretation of the old myth. I suppose we all need to take a step back and give our old conceptions a fresh view.

your art is always very warm and magical, I like that a lot. I really wish I had a story book illustrated with your drawings!
I am not familiar with the story behind Cetus and Andromeda but your take on it seems very lovely, and for some reason I feel a certain calmness from your drawing. This Andromeda doesn't seem to fear Cetus. I hope one day your Andromeda escapes with the Whale, out into the great great ocean. :)

Thank you! I wanted her to be poised, since most paintings have her struggling and scared. Choosing between what you have to do and what you want to do is always hard, but I believe in taking the plunge into the unknown.

this is quite wonderfully made. The art itself is very appealing, and after knowing a bit more about the concept of it, makes it even better. The contrasting colors are really beautiful

Aw, thank you kindly for the comment! "The Chained Maiden" was given to me as a challenge and after hours of racking my brain and researching, I decided that I didn't want to be traditional and didn't want a helpless heroine. I felt something along the lines of, "Well crap, she's got an entire GALAXY named after her now," so I wanted my interpretation of Andromeda to hold that amount of power and strength.

/applause I love your take on this myth. I always felt that Andromeda was such... a weak heroine, chained and helpless and truly a damsel waiting for a hero. I think I prefer your rendition much butter.

:3 Thank you~ I agree; I rather liked the Andromeda myth as a child, but returning to it again, I felt a little huffy about Andromeda's role. Though as Greek heroes go, I kind of adore Perseus still-- but this piece wasn't about him strutting his stuff, it's about Andromeda. And so I took the time to figure out how to make it about her, so it's a great compliment to me that you enjoy my interpretation of the myth.
